Travel experts indicate that the best time to book a hotel room is between 15 days and 2-3 months before the trip. Accommodation is one of the costs many people have to consider, as it is often quite expensive. Therefore, maximising savings on room rates is always a priority. Hotel prices constantly change, based on supply and demand. So when is the best time to book?

According to experts from the US travel magazine Travel + Leisure, there is no exact time for the cheapest price, but there is a relatively optimal time. NerdWallet, a US financial company, analysed over 2,500 hotel rooms over two and a half years, finding that those who booked 15 days in advance saved an average of 13% compared to those who booked four months in advance.
For example, if you want to stay on 30/3, the booking should be made in the middle of the month. This timing does not account for holidays or peak season. According to the travel app Hopper, 15 days in advance is the best time for major cities, but this is not accurate for tourist destinations and resorts. For these locations, Hopper notes that hotel prices are usually lowest when booked 2-3 months in advance.

Booking at the last minute (close to the check-in date and time) can save money as room rates often drop significantly, but it also carries risks.
If you wait until the last minute to book, your preferred hotel or other accommodations in the area might be fully booked. To minimise this risk, it's advisable to book 2-3 months in advance at properties offering free cancellation and reasonable rates.
As the cancellation deadline approaches, check hotel room rates again. If you find a better price, book the new accommodation and cancel the old one. This method requires effort but ensures the best possible price.
Many travellers still share the tip that the time of day and day of the week you book also matter for savings. However, American magazines suggest this is merely a "myth." Room rates might vary slightly, but not significantly. "It's better to look at the bigger picture. Choosing a booking time between two weeks and 2-3 months before your trip, depending on the destination, will be more beneficial. And whenever you find a price you're happy with, book it," according to Travel + Leisure.
